2015 QSB Lab Olympics Results

Morgan Quail of the Hernday Lab

While many labs only had one or two participants, making a team award less feasible, there were 2 clear teams that were winners. The McCloskey Lab amazingly had 3 of the top 5 overall performers in the competition. And the Saha Lab clearly should receive the "Spirit Award" having made matching team shirts. Thank you to all who participated, volunteered, and contributed baby photos to the event! Special thanks to Dave Ardell for giving the green light and QSB funds to sponsor this event. Top performers:

Event 1: Speed Tip Box Filling

The top performers for this event was Morgan Quail from the Hernday Lab. He put on gloves and filled a P200 tip box in an amazing 1:55. The was including a 5 second penalty for forgetting to remove gloves before stopping his timer.

Event 2: Pl Baby Photo Matching

Congrats to Glenda Polack of the Nobile Lab and Nicole Madfis of the McCloskey Lab for being able toe correctly identify every baby photo of the following PI's: Dave Ardell, Caroline Frank, Andy LiWang, Patricia LiWang, Jennifer Manilay, Kara McCloskey, Clarissa Nobile, and Jim Parsons (Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory)

Event 3: Pipette Tip Shooting

The top performers for this Skeeball-styled event was Edwin Shen of the McCloskey Lab. He scored 135 points, while the average was 73 points.

Event 4: Unlabeled Chemical Identification

The top performers on this event were Manuel Cornejo of the Ortiz Lab and MAK Al-Kuhlani of the Hoyer Lab. They were able to correctly identify all 12 unlabeled liquids and solids in 15ml conical tubes.

Event 5: Weight Estimation

The top performer for this event was Stephen Wilson from the Filipp Lab. He was asked try and pour 30g of sodium chloride onto a weight boat and amazingly was able to get within 0.3g on his first try.

Event 6: Chemical Structure Matching

The following people were able to correctly identify all 12 of the chemical structures of some common lab and household chemicals: Keedrian Olmstead of the Filipp Lab, Lauren Edwards of the Filipp Lab, Lian Wong of the McCloskey Lab, Manuel Cornejo of the Ortiz Lab, Nicole Madfis of the McCloskey Lab, Rachel Hatano of the McCloskey Lab, Robert Poston of the Saha Lab, and Simar Singh of the Filipp lab.

Event 7: Volume Estimation

The top performer for this event was Alberto Millan of the Manilay Lab. Participants were asked to pour exactly 30ml of water into 3 oddly shaped glass containers. Alberto was within 1ml on two of the containers and within 4ml on the third.

Event 8: p-Value Guessing

The top performer on this event was Alberto Millan of the Manilay Lab who correctly guessed the correct p-value range on 8 out of 12 data-sets. This proved to be the most challenging event for all the competitors.

Event 9: Stir Bar Removal

Kristen Valentine of the Hoyer Lab was the fastest at removing 3 stir bars from 3 different shaped cups/flasks using nothing but another stir bar. She was able to do it in 19 seconds.
